Refurbish and Upgrade Your Old Lamp Posts to the 21st Century!

Refurbished Low Voltage LED Lamp Post

Refurbished Low Voltage LED Lamp Post

Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Colorado, we are frequently asked if we can do anything to refurbish and upgrade a homeowner’s existing lamp posts – whether they were originally installed as line voltage or low voltage. Fortunately, the answer is yes as you can see in the newly refurbished and re-installed low voltage LED lamp post shown in the picture to the right.

For this project we removed the 50W incandescent bulbs and bulb sockets and replaced them with fully-integrated 4x4W LED towers that provide 360 degrees of light output. During this process, we cleaned and repainted all of the metal components of the lamp post, cleaned and re-frosted the glass lens, and installed the LED tower. This was one of two lamp posts that we refurbished and the results speak for themselves.

For situations in which the glass lenses are broken, we can usually find replacement lenses from the original lighting manufacturer or from one of our local glass suppliers. And if you would prefer to start over with a new lantern top, we can help you select a new design from a range of available products.

In the photos below, you can see the component parts including the LED tower prior to reassembling the lantern top and reinstalling it on the post at the homeowner’s property.

In this ever-increasing throw away society, we are happy that we can offer homeowners a more sustainable solution for their old lamp post lighting.

Low Voltage LEDs for Commercial Outdoor Lighting?

Ya Yas New LED Outdoor Lighting

Ya Yas New LED Outdoor Lighting

The answer is a resounding YES! Outdoor Lighting Perspectives (OLP) of Colorado recently completed two projects prior to the holidays – one for a restaurant in Greenwood Village (Ya Yas) and the other for a townhome community (Woodbox Condos) in Fort Collins. At YaYas, the line voltage 100W metal halide HID fixtures were replaced with OLP’s low voltage 24W LED box flood lights (an energy savings of 76-percent). At Woodbox Condos, the old line voltage post lights with 120W flood lights were replaced with low voltage 16W LED post lights (an energy savings of 87-percent). In addition, other dark areas of the property were illuminated with low voltage 24W LED box flood lights mounted on the exterior walls of the condo buildings.

In a lot of these commercial applications, the previously-installed line voltage wiring to the exterior lighting has become corroded or severed, or may not even meet present-day electrical code. The cost to repair and/or replace this line voltage wiring (at a depth of 18-inches in conduit or 24-inches direct burial) can be prohibitive, and the damage to any mature landscaping can be problematic.

That’s what makes low voltage LED lighting so attractive for commercial applications compared to redoing the line voltage lighting;  the lighting effect is just as bright; the energy-savings is upwards of 75-percent; and the overall project cost is much less. And by the way, a lot of older residential properties and estates still use line voltage lighting for illuminating landscape and architectural features. As this wiring begins to fail after many decades of use, retrofitting to low voltage LEDs becomes a very viable option for them as well.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Colorado Installs New Energy-Efficient LEDs at Arrowhead Shores Community Entrances

New LED Lighting at Arrowhead Shores Community Entrance

New LED Lighting at Arrowhead Shores Community Entrance, Douglas County – Colorado

Last week, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives (OLP) of Colorado installed its first commercial LED fixtures at three community entrances in Arrowhead Shores (located in the Roxborough Village area of Douglas County).

The new 24W LED fixtures with a rated life of 50,000 hours, manufactured by OLP’s factory in Nashville,  replaced the old 70W metal halide fixtures with a rated bulb life of around 7,000- to 10,000- hours. The new fixtures will save the community roughly $66 annually in their electric bill, as well as savings with on-going maintenance costs to replace the metal halide bulbs and ballast.

The other advantage that LED fixtures have over metal halide fixtures is that LED’s do not experience any color shift. If you’ve ever been to a sporting event where some of the lights appear to be white, pink, green, or blue, etc., you’re actually seeing metal halide bulbs in different points in their life cycle.

Since the original lighting fixtures were powered by line voltage, we used line voltage for the new fixtures as well. However, each fixture had a small, self-contained low voltage transformer to power the four, 6W LEDs in each unit. As you can see in the photo above, these very green, energy-efficient fixtures do a great job lighting a community entrance – and we look forward to installing more of these at entrance monuments and other commercial applications as well.
