Low Voltage LEDs for Commercial Outdoor Lighting?

Ya Yas New LED Outdoor Lighting

Ya Yas New LED Outdoor Lighting

The answer is a resounding YES! Outdoor Lighting Perspectives (OLP) of Colorado recently completed two projects prior to the holidays – one for a restaurant in Greenwood Village (Ya Yas) and the other for a townhome community (Woodbox Condos) in Fort Collins. At YaYas, the line voltage 100W metal halide HID fixtures were replaced with OLP’s low voltage 24W LED box flood lights (an energy savings of 76-percent). At Woodbox Condos, the old line voltage post lights with 120W flood lights were replaced with low voltage 16W LED post lights (an energy savings of 87-percent). In addition, other dark areas of the property were illuminated with low voltage 24W LED box flood lights mounted on the exterior walls of the condo buildings.

In a lot of these commercial applications, the previously-installed line voltage wiring to the exterior lighting has become corroded or severed, or may not even meet present-day electrical code. The cost to repair and/or replace this line voltage wiring (at a depth of 18-inches in conduit or 24-inches direct burial) can be prohibitive, and the damage to any mature landscaping can be problematic.

That’s what makes low voltage LED lighting so attractive for commercial applications compared to redoing the line voltage lighting;  the lighting effect is just as bright; the energy-savings is upwards of 75-percent; and the overall project cost is much less. And by the way, a lot of older residential properties and estates still use line voltage lighting for illuminating landscape and architectural features. As this wiring begins to fail after many decades of use, retrofitting to low voltage LEDs becomes a very viable option for them as well.

The Holidays Are a Great Time to Sell a House – Especially If You Add a Little Lighting!

Which  house would you rather purchase?

A few Saturday’s ago I heard a local realtor (Rich Petrone) being interviewed on KKZN AM760’s Saturday morning show – The American Real Estate Network – about the advisability of selling a home during the holiday season.  Rich said that the holidays were a fantastic time to sell a house because –

  • there are fewer houses on the market; i.e., less competition
  • there are more motivated buyers seeing different neighborhoods while attending holiday parties and events
  • and last but not least, the houses that are well illuminated by landscape and/or holiday lighting have great curb appeal and look very welcoming

During the last 15 years, our company (Outdoor Lighting Perspectives) has illuminated many homes during the holiday and winter season because the homeowners had already listed or planned to list their home for sale. During this time of year, just about every commuter in the work force is traveling home after dark, and if they’re in the market for a new house, what better time is there to make your house stand out after dark.

Companies who provide staging services and products for home sellers to enhance the interior of homes have been all the rage in recent years. So now is definitely the time to consider exterior lighting staging services – either on a temporary or permanent basis. Lighting a home on a temporary basis is similar to the evening lighting design demonstrations that we perform. The only difference is that these lights would remain on site for several weeks or months, and that the temporary wiring, etc. would be hidden from view.

The other option is to permanently install a basic design of 15 or fewer lights to enhance the primary architectural features of the house to give it curb appeal after dark. This lighting then becomes an additional feature and asset of the home, and it would also provide the new homeowner the opportunity for expanding the lighting system in the future. Lastly, adding a few strings of twinkle lights on trees and shrubs can add to the spirit of the season – and bring even more attention to the home you’re hoping to sell sooner rather than later.

Celebrate Halloween or Support the Denver Broncos with Orange Lens Covers for Your Landscape Lights

Lighting Effects with Orange Lens Covers

Lighting Effects with Orange Lens Covers

Orange lens covers on your landscaping lighting fixtures make it really easy to support the Denver Broncos or celebrate Halloween – and on the last week of October, you can really do both. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives manufactures special oval and circular orange acrylic lens covers that fit OLP’s above ground and flush-mounted well lights.

Autumn-colored leaves this time of year – or red brick really seem to take on the orange glow of Halloween. It’s always fun to hear the trick and treaters say – “look at all of the orange trees and house.”

The oval color lens covers are roughly 4-15/16″ by 6-15/16″ and are available in amber/orange, blue, green, light blue, purple, red, smoke and yellow. The circular color lens covers are 5-11/16″ outside diameter (4-15/16″ inside diameter) and are available in the same colors as the oval lenses.

COLOR LENS COVERS - CIRCULAR

Many of our current customers who do not have well lights manufactured by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives have found that they can still use these lens covers. They’ve found that they can temporarily tape or secure the color lens covers over the well lights for a special event, holiday, or to support their favorite sports team.

There’s certainly no easier way to decorate outdoors for the holidays than by using color lens covers on your landscape lighting system. And better yet, you won’t have to miss any touchdowns by the Broncos!

Celebrate National Outdoor Lighting Month in Colorado

national-outdoor-lighting-month-2013-logo@2x-c7e66e50Autumn is a beautiful time of year in Colorado with warm days and pleasant evenings. As the sun begins to set earlier and earlier, there is no reason to stop using  your beautiful outdoor spaces that you’ve enjoyed throughout the rest of the year.

That is why Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Colorado is helping to support and promote National Outdoor Lighting Month throughout the month of October. Coinciding with the end of Daylight Saving Time (that occurs on Sunday, November 3rd), National Outdoor Lighting Month will be an annual consumer awareness effort to educate homeowners about the safety, security and lifestyle/property enhancements that outdoor lighting can add to their homes.

To support the educational aspect of the campaign, a free guide on How to Choose An Outdoor Lighting Professional can be downloaded from the website. The guide provides helpful design tips on pathway lighting, up-lighting and grazing, outdoor living space lighting, deck and step lighting, and festival lighting. The Guide also provides helpful tips on product selection, installation guidelines, and on-going maintenance considerations.

Outdoor lighting can also add to the curb appeal of any house this time of year. Anyone who has ever tried to purchase or sell a house this time of year can also attest to the value that outdoor lighting can bring to the real estate transaction. Which house will get noticed more – the house with only one carriage light or the one that is beautifully illuminated that basically says welcome home?

You can read more about National Outdoor Lighting Month in a recent article in Turf Magazine.  If you have any questions about lighting techniques or how outdoor lighting can add to the beauty and usability of your home, please call us at 303/948-9656.

Celebrate National Night Out 2013 in Colorado

30th-Anniversary-POV-LogoThe 30th anniversary of National Night Out , Americas’s NIGHTOUT against crime, will be celebrated throughout Colorado and the country on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Founded by the National Association of Town Watch initiative, National Night Out (NNO) has become an annual event to bring communities together to fight crime. NNO now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities in all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.

Since it is well known that outdoor lighting can be a deterrent against crime, homeowners have been asked to show their support with this community effort by turning on their porch lights. Of course, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Colorado has always been a strong proponent of the use of landscape lighting every night of the year to enhance a home’s safety and security throughout the property.

To participate in a NNO event near you, the following is a partial list of Colorado cities and counties holding events tomorrow evening:

City of Arvada, City of Denver, El Paso County, Jefferson County, Larimer Country, City of Lakewood, City of Littleton, City of Longmont, City of Lone Tree,

So turn on your outdoor lights and get to know your neighbors, and celebrate National Night Out 2013!

Outdoor Lighting Enhanced with LEDs at Ya Yas Euro Bistro Restaurant in Greenwood Village

Ya Yas Restaurant LED Sign Lighting

Ya Yas Restaurant LED Sign Lighting

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives (OLP) of Colorado recently completed an outdoor lighting project at Ya Yas Euro Bistro restaurant at 8310 East Belleview Avenue in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Ya Yas has been a very popular restaurant in the south metro area of Denver for the better part of two decades, and they recently installed a new monument sign at the intersection of East Belleview Avenue and East Crescent Parkway.

Since there was no available line voltage power in the imDaytime View of Ya Yas Euro Bistro Restaurant Signmediate vicinity of the newly constructed monument, OLP of Colorado installed their factory’s low voltage model of the LC-50, 24W LED rocket-mounted flood light with a 50,000-hour rated life. This newly illuminated monument sign will make it easier for both long-time and first-time patrons of Ya Yas to find this great restaurant in the evening hours.

Ya Yas Restaurant LED Path Lighting

OLP of Colorado also replaced the restaurant’s three outdated line voltage pagoda-style path lights with OLP’s low voltage BB-09 (9-inch diameter copper path hats), 8W LED at the main entrance of the facility. The previous path lights used 60W incandescent bulbs for a total of 180W – compared to the new LED path lights that use a total of 24W. That represents a reduction in energy use of 87-percent!

So the next time you dine at Ya Yas Euro Bistro, check out our new LED lights.

Outdoor Lighting Still Rated Highly in 2013 ASLA Top Outdoor Living Trends Survey

Enjoy Your Landscaping in the Evening with Outdoor Lighting

Enjoy Your Landscaping in the Evening with Outdoor Lighting

In the 2013 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), 95.1-percent of the respondents across all categories rated lighting (#3 in the rankings) as one of the most in-demand items for the coming year.

Ranked ahead of lighting were fire pits/fireplaces  (97.0-percent), and grills (96.3-percent).  The most popular outdoor design elements were outdoor living spaces (94.5-percent), gardens/landscaped spaces (94.4-percent), and outdoor recreation amenities (76.3-percent).

As we tell all of our customers, it is important to have the design elements in place first before completing a lighting design. That way we can conduct an evening lighting design demonstration to actually show you how your property will look after dark. That’s the best way to ensure that you’ll be receiving maximum enjoyment of your property during the evening hours.

Now that it’s finally Spring in Colorado (I think we just jumped directly to Summer), Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Colorado has begun scheduling evening lighting design demonstrations. So give us a call 303/948-9656 if you would like to see how beautiful your landscaping can look after dark!

LED Landscape Lights Celebrate Earth Day Every Day of the Year… for Many Years!

earth-day-bigThis Spring we exhibited at two garden and home shows. Almost every attendee who stopped by to speak with us said that if they’re going to invest in a landscape lighting system, it had to be LEDs.

Earth Day 2013 is being celebrated on Monday, April 22nd – and with LED landscape lighting, you can be sure that you are doing your part to lower your carbon footprint on the planet not just on Earth Day, but during the rest of the year as well.

# of Halogen 35W PAR36 Bulbs Required for One Fixture in 11 Years

# of Halogen 35W PAR36 Bulbs Required for One Fixture in 11 Years

LED bulbs are green for a number of reasons, including the fact that they use on average 75- to 83-percent less energy than the comparable halogen bulb. LED bulbs also last longer (50,000 hours) compared to halogens (3,000 – 4,000 hours).  During an 11-year period of time, a single well light in a landscape lighting system  could use as many as 15 bulbs (shown in the photo at right) – and unfortunately all of them would find their way to a local landfill. We tried unsuccessfully to find a recycler who would accept glass halogen bulbs, but unfortunately there is no economical way today to recycle these bulbs. As a result, no one recycles them.

# of LED 6W PAR36 Bulbs Needed for One Fixture in 11 YearsWith LED bulbs, there are no defective parts being sent to the landfill annually, or ever. The bulbs can be returned to the factory to be rebuilt every 11 years or so, or the individual components can be recycled. Either way, it’s a win-win situation for the homeowner and Mother Earth.

Because the LEDs are more reliable, fewer service visits are required resulting in fewer vehicle miles and carbon emissions. One scheduled maintenance visit each year will ensure that LED landscape lighting systems continue to operate perfectly for many, many years to come.

With the Outdoor Lighting Perspectives line of products, the standard halogen fixtures can be retrofitted to LED. In other words, we’re re-purposing the fixtures to LED, we’re not requiring the homeowner to buy all new fixtures. Brand-new LED landscape lighting systems also require considerably  smaller low voltage transformers and much less low voltage copper wiring than their halogen counterparts.

Whether we’re retrofitting a landscape lighting system to LED or installing a new LED system, we’ve been finding that the payback period for the investment (compared to halogen) occurs in a very reasonable timeframe (anywhere between one and four years typically). In a retrofit system, the primary factors are energy and maintenance cost savings. In a new system, the primary factors are component/labor cost savings (smaller transformer and less wire, less labor time), as well as the energy and maintenance cost savings.

Have a Happy Earth Day!

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Colorado is a full-service outdoor lighting design, installation and maintenance company for residential, municipal, and commercial projects – and we design and install lighting automation controls as well. Of course we still design and sell low voltage quartz halogen systems, and the great thing about our lighting products is that we can retrofit any of the fixtures we have already installed to LED whenever the homeowner is ready. We are also happy to provide lighting energy audits to show the homeowner how much they could save in electrical costs by converting to LEDs. We are glad to do this for any OLP or non-OLP systems. We also provide turnkey holiday lighting products/services and special event lighting throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you at the show!
